Scholarship details

The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship scheme is funded by the Australian Government to provide financial assistance to students undertaking postgraduate research degrees.

$28,854 per annum tax free (2022 rate), *indexed annually

*commensurate with current Research Training Scholarship base stipend rate

Scholarship duration

3 years with the possibility of two 6 month extensions in approved circumstances for Doctoral programs and 1.5 years with the possibility of one 6 month extension in approved circumstances for Masters programs.

Eligibility
Eligibility

To be eligible for a RTP Stipend, RTP Fees Offset or RTP Allowance you must:

  • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Higher Degree by Research program at USC or be currently enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program at USC
  • Must not already have an equivalent qualification to the one for which they are currently applying.
  • To be eligible for an RTP Stipend, a student must not be receiving a living allowance award, or scholarship that provides an income greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate. Income unrelated to the student’s HDR or income received for the student’s course of study but not for the purposes of supporting general living costs is not to be taken into account.
  • To be eligible to receive a RTP Fees Offset Scholarship, a student must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR tuition fees.
Important Points

All Prospective students can apply concurrently for admission into a Higher Degree by Research program and RTP Scholarship. However, your RTP scholarship application will not be considered by the RTP selection committee until you have been approved for entry into a Higher Degree by Research program at USC.

All Domestic students, upon being offered unconditional offer to undertake a higher degree by research program at an Australian university, will be offered an RTP Fees Offset Scholarship. Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships are only awarded to students of exceptional research potential.

As per the Guidelines, International Scholarships may only be awarded to students undertaking research in an area identified by USC as a research concentration. Further detail on USC's Research Centres and Clusters is available at Research and innovation.

Recipients for RTP Scholarships will be selected in order of merit on the following criteria:

  • Academic qualifications; and
  • Alignment of the proposed research to one of USC's areas of research concentration; and
  • Record of research publications or non-traditional research outputs; and
  • Professional Research Experience

How to apply

Current HDR Students
Current HDR Students

Students currently enrolled in a higher degree by research program or who already have received an offer for admission and deferred commencement of program must submit their RTP application documents to the Graduate Research School by the application round closing date.

What to Submit

A complete RTP application should include:

1. Research Training Program Scholarship application form. Please ensure the form is signed by you and your principal supervisor.

2. Supporting documentation as outlined on the application form:

  • SC1 Undergraduate academic transcripts
  • SC2 HDR academic transcripts
  • SC3 First page of publication in English
  • SC4 May include your CV, List of referees with contact information, and any additional evidence of research outputs not already listed in the application.

3. You must combine all documents into a single PDF for submission and name the document RTPS Application_<insert round>_<insert your name>

* For PDF documents you must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded from the Adobe Download page.

Important Note

The Graduate Research School do not conduct preliminary checks on applications, all documents submitted will be presented to the RTP Scholarship Selection Panel as your complete application. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they have submitted all required documents as per the instructions on this page.

Prospective HDR Applicants

Prospective HDR applicants can submit their RTP application in two ways. The options for submission are outlined below:

Option 1: Submit HDR admission and RTP Scholarship application concurrently.

You can submit your application for HDR admission and RTP Scholarship concurrently.

*Please note, to ensure your HDR program admission application is finalised in time to be considered for RTP selection, you should submit your admission application at least 6 weeks before the RTP round closing date.

Stage 1: Submission

Domestic Applicants

1. Complete the online application for admission into a higher degree by research program via ApplyUSC.

2. Attach your completed Research Training Program Scholarship application form as a supporting document in your online application for admission via ApplyUSC. Please ensure the form is signed by you and your nominated principal supervisor.

3. Submit your application.

International Applicants

International applicants must email their application for admission into a higher degree by research program and completed Research Training Program Scholarship application form  to information@usc.edu.au.

Stage 2: Assessment 

1. Your application will initially be processed for HDR program admission only.

2. If you are approved for entry into a HDR program, your RTP application will automatically be included for consideration in the the selection round that you have applied for.

3. You will receive an outcome for your program admission before you are advised of your scholarship outcome.

Option 2: Submit RTP application separately 

If you wish to wait for your HDR admission outcome before submitting your RTP application or if have already submitted your online admission application but did not include your RTP application in error, you can submit your RTP application documents via email. This must be submitted to the Graduate Research School by the round closing date.

If your HDR program application is not approved for admission, your RTP application is then ineligible for consideration and will not be assessed.

Pending Documentation

Applicants in their final semester of a Bachelor Honours Degree or Masters Degree (Research) or equivalent may still apply. Please provide information on when those results will be available. The qualification will be assessed as completed to the highest standard.

A Conditional Offer may be made with an Unconditional Offer being made once evidence is received of the successful completion of the degree to the required standard.
