HDR scholarships

USC administers two types of HDR scholarships.

1. USC Research scholarships

  • Tuition fee offset and/or stipend scholarships from a range of funding bodies and administered by USC.

2. Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships

The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships are provided by the Australian government and administered by Australian Universities to support both domestic and international students undertaking postgraduate research degrees. Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships include both stipend (living allowance) and tuition fee offset scholarships.

  • Bachelor’s Degree with First Class Honours or equivalent previous study, relevant work experience, research publications, or other research experience

  • Not hold a PhD

  • Not have previously held a Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship unless it was terminated within six months of the current scholarship’s payments commencing

  • Not be the recipient of an equivalent award, scholarship, or salary, providing a benefit greater than 75 percent of the Research Training Program rate to undertake a HDR. Income unrelated to the course of study is not to be taken into account

  • Satisfactory progress must be maintained throughout the PhD program

Indigenous Australian Higher Degree by Research Scholarship Applications open

To be eligible for the USC Indigenous Australian HDR Scholarship, applicants:

  • identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander on their application for admission to the higher degree by research (HDR) program and the application for the scholarship
  • are accepted for entry to a higher degree by research (HDR) at USC
  • do not hold an equivalent HDR qualification to that being applied for
  • recipients must maintain satisfactory progress as a full-time higher degree by research candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast

Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP) Applications closed

To be eligible for a RTP Stipend, RTP Fees Offset or RTP Allowance you must:

  • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Higher Degree by Research program at USC or be currently enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program at USC
  • Must not already have an equivalent qualification to the one for which they are currently applying.
  • To be eligible for an RTP Stipend, a student must not be receiving a living allowance award, or scholarship that provides an income greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate. Income unrelated to the student’s HDR or income received for the student’s course of study but not for the purposes of supporting general living costs is not to be taken into account.
  • To be eligible to receive a RTP Fees Offset Scholarship, a student must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR tuition fees.

To be eligible for this award, an applicant:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident
  • must have completed either a Bachelor of Nursing Science or a Bachelor of Nursing Science/Bachelor of Midwifery
  • must meet the eligibility criteria for admission into the degree applied for

Rotary Postgraduate Scholarship Applications closed
  • awarded to the three (3) most meritorious postgraduate students who have completed their undergraduate degree at USC and who have enrolled in postgraduate studies at the Master or Doctorate levels
  • with competing students of equal merit, a Scholarship will be awarded to a student from the Sunshine Coast Region

The Jeanie Bell USC PhD Scholarship, 2021-2024 Applications open
  • Applicants who have migrant and/or refugee and/or other culturally and linguistically diverse status from the global South or who are Indigenous are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Australia, citizens of New Zealand, permanent humanitarian visa holders or international student visa holders in Australia at the time of application.
  • Applicants for the PhD will have a minimum of a First Class Honours or equivalent in Education, History, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education or Comparative and Cross-cultural Education (or other relevant discipline) 
  • Must be acceptable as candidates for a PhD by Research degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
  • Not have an equivalent qualification to the one for which they are currently applying
