What is information privacy?
The Queensland Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) governs the way the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) must collect, store, provide access to, use and disclose an individual’s personal information.
Personal information means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable (whether the information or opinion is true or not and whether the information or opinion is recorded in material form or not).
Privacy statement
UniSC is committed to protecting the privacy of all individuals who interact with and provide their personal information to us.
UniSC collects and uses personal information to provide services as a higher education institution. We also collect personal information to communicate with you, improve services, and support other business functions, such as human resource management, delivery of community services, research, marketing, and alumni engagement.
The University collects and manages your personal information in a responsible, ethical, and secure manner. We take reasonable steps to ensure the personal information we hold about you is accurate, up-to-date, complete, and not misleading. As well as, protected from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Your personal information is retained per the University's Records Management - Procedures, until it is no longer required for the purpose it was collected, or required under a law.
We may collect personal information from you in person, by phone, email, post, our website, or other digital platforms and devices. We also utilise digital tracking tools such as cookies, on our websites and social media channels for automatic collection of information to improve your experience with the University.
The University reserves the right to revise this Privacy statement or any part of it from time to time. Please review this Privacy statement periodically for changes.
Access my personal information
To find out what personal information UniSC holds about you, contact the University's RTI/Privacy Officer. You can learn more about the process to request access to your personal information under the Administrative access scheme. Please visit our Right to information page.
Amend my personal information
We may check with you that your personal information is complete, correct, up-to-date, and not misleading. However, the University relies on you to advise us of any changes to your personal information to help us maintain our records.
You can ask us to amend your personal information held by the University through a change of details request if you are alumni, current student, or employee (via USC Staff system).
For all other requests to amend personal information, please contact the University's RTI/Privacy Officer using the ‘Contact us’ details.
Privacy complaints
Should you have concerns about how the University has treated your personal information please contact the University to discuss your concerns. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you may make a formal privacy complaint.
- Contact the University’s RTI/Privacy Officer for a copy of the Complaint form.
- Submit your complaint form and any supporting documents to the University’s RTI/Privacy Officer by email or post.
If you are unable to lodge the complaint, another person can do this on your behalf with your authority.
Your complaint will be acknowledged and investigated. Within 45 business days from the receipt of your complaint the University will respond to you in writing the results of the investigation.
If you do not receive a response within 45 business days or are not satisfied with the University’s response, you are entitled to lodge a written complaint to the Office of the Information Commissioner Queensland (OICQ) for review and mediation.
