Presented by Professor Jacquie Ripat, PhD, OT Reg (MB), University of Manitoba, UniSC Adjunct Professor.
Join us for an engaging public presentation on Wednesday, 20 November 2024, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) or online. This free event hosted by the UniSC Healthy Ageing Research Cluster is open to anyone with an interest in aging in place, including older adults, family members, students, allied health professionals, and others passionate about supporting independence in later life.
Our guest speaker, Professor Jacquie Ripat from Canada, is a distinguished academic and expert in aging, technology, and environmental design. In this workshop, she will explore how thoughtful kitchen design can help older adults remain in their homes safely and independently as they age. Drawing on research conducted in Canada’s innovative “Smart Suite,” a tech-enabled apartment, Professor Ripat will discuss the impact of kitchen ergonomics on everyday activities, such as cooking and cleaning, for older individuals.
During the workshop, Professor Ripat will present key findings from a study involving older women, aged 67-81, who participated in experimental cooking sessions in both their own homes and in an adjustable-height research kitchen. The results revealed significant ergonomic risks when using standard home kitchens, particularly around tasks like chopping and using the sink. By identifying these risks, Professor Ripat aims to inform more inclusive kitchen designs that enhance safety, social connections, and accessibility for older adults.
Whether you are a professional working in healthcare or home design, or simply someone interested in the evolving field of aging in place, this presentation will offer valuable insights into how ergonomically optimized environments can support well-being and autonomy for our aging population.
