Gender affirmation

UniSC is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.

This page includes practical advice to support gender diverse students and staff who may be transitioning or affirming their gender at UniSC, including those who identify with non-binary gender identities.

You can use this information as a starting point on how to support others.

Change of Personal Details

You can update personal details, such as a preferred name and gender, on UniSC records by completing the Change of Personal Details form. Submit the form, with the requested documents, to USC Central.

Changing your preferred name will not automatically result in changes to ID cards, class lists, examination registration and email. UniSC is currently developing initiatives to ensure this is an automatic process in future.

We are aware there are many factors to consider when transitioning at work or in a study environment. This can include emotional support and the practical considerations mentioned above. To address these, anyone who is transitioning can enter a formal plan for transition.

Transitioning Plan

A transition plan maps out the practical considerations that need to occur for those transitioning. For UniSC staff members who are transitioning, the plan will be developed with their manager. For students, it will be developed with a Student Wellbeing support officer. The plan will assist students and staff in having an open, honest and confidential discussion about:

  • who needs to know about the transition
  • timelines for transitioning and requirements for graduation (if applicable)
  • what flexibility there is in submission of assignments to accommodate any medical appointments the student may have
  • all gender toilets
  • preferred name changes
  • notification to examinations of preferred name
  • name and pronoun use

These discussions are protected under the Privacy and Data Protection Act.
