Hi, I’m Kimberly and I’m studying a dual degree in Business and Law. In semester 1, 2024, I embarked on an exciting (but daunting) adventure to study abroad in the Czech Republic. I was on my way to Brno, a city I had only heard about in textbooks and travel guides. I had chosen Brno for its renowned Masaryk University which specialises in law, its vibrant student life, and its affordable cost of living (and beer!).

Studying abroad in the Czech Republic was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Masaryk’s strong academic reputation, combined with the vibrant city of Brno, created the perfect environment for learning and growth. Studying in a different country proved to be a lot easier than I initially imagined. The tutors are passionate and knowledgeable and give you lots of support as an international student. One major difference in teaching that I noticed was the quantity of assessment and the way it is assessed. It is very common for European assessments to be oral, meaning the typical exam would be delivered verbally. While this can be intimidating, the professors are understanding and provide a relatively relaxed, conversational approach to the assessment.

Brno’s convenient location and proximity to other European countries further solidified my decision and ultimately led me to travel to 13 different countries throughout my 6 months abroad. Out of all the countries I travelled to, I especially loved my time in Slovenia which was spent hiking, cycling, horse riding and white-water rafting with my new-found university friends.

The best part of studying abroad was undoubtedly the incredible friends I made. Masaryk’s strong student network (ESN) allowed me to settle in quickly by facilitating events to make friends and connect with students from all over the world. I met people from all over the world, sharing laughter, tears, and unforgettable adventures together. From cruising along the river in Budapest to sightseeing in Vienna, or snorkelling over a shipwreck in Croatia, the experiences I shared with these beautiful people will forever keep us connected, despite the distance. I made lifelong friends from countries I never thought I'd visit. I even concluded my abroad experience in Paris, visiting the university friends I had made during my time in Brno and together, we shared one last Parisian adventure before I returned to reality.

The international friendships I had formed, the places I travelled to and the experiences I had gained were invaluable. As I boarded the plane back home, I knew that my time in Brno would forever hold a special place in my heart. Studying abroad was more than just an academic experience; it was a personal journey of growth and connection.

If I had one tip to give to someone looking to study abroad, it would be to just do it. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, take the leap and embrace the uncertainty. It is this uncertainty that will provide you with the ultimate foundation for personal and professional growth. Combining study with travel and adventure, a semester abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you won’t regret.
