Everything you need to get your writing project started

Do you love writing, but worry about apostrophe catastrophes? Would you like to confidently write and copy-edit, so your words cut through in a world of information overload?

Do you have a stellar story or pitch you want to write? Do you want to get your writing read by a broader readership? Or do you just want to know how the publishing sector works? 

Designed for all writing enthusiasts whether creative, professional, social media, or academic, this course will provide you with key tangible skills and knowledge to progress your writing and editing.

What is covered

Scheduled over one day, this is an all-in-one short introductory course presented by experienced UniSC academics from the School of Business and Creative Industries.

  • Punctuation and grammar refresher
  • Hot quick tips to edit your writing like a pro
  • How to use AI to enhance your writing
  • Overview of opportunities within the Australian publishing landscape
  • Who your audience really is and the (not so) subtle art of self-promotion

In the morning, you will receive a refresher on the intricacies of punctuation, before building on your intermediate writing skills to incorporate AI into your writing, clarify your message, and hone your editing skills. In the afternoon, you will gain an overview of the Australian publishing landscape and develop insight into opportunities and markets for writing, self-publishing and self-promotion, and how to plan your next steps to build an exciting and sustainable writing career.

    Meet the presenter

    Dr Sarah Casey is Senior Lecturer and Program Coordinator (Communication) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. She teaches copy-editing alongside a range of Communication courses. She leads the Stories of Country Women projects. Her work and lived experience about rural life has featured in academic publications, national media, and internationally in the Chicago Quarterly ReviewThe Australian Issue’. She is the co-author of two books and is particularly interested in public dissemination of research including through microdocumentaries and podcasts. Sarah is a long-term executive member of the national peak body, the Australian Women’s and Gender Studies Association

     

     

    Meet the presenter

    Dr Karen Hands is a lecturer in Creative Industries and program coordinator of the Bachelor of Creative Industries at UniSC. Prior to commencing at UniSC in 2020 she was the Associate Publisher of Griffith Review and was previously the General Manager of Queensland Writers Centre and Producer at Brisbane Powerhouse. She is a peer assessor and industry advisor for the Literature Board of Creative Australia (formerly known as The Australia Council). Her research and writing has been published in international scholarly journals and in the acclaimed anthology Teacher, Teacher edited by Megan Daley, published by Affirm Press in 2023.
