How to support your child through the transition to university

Starting university is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring a mix of emotions for both students and parents. As your child embarks on this new chapter, they’ll face new experiences, challenges and opportunities for growth. While this transition is about helping them gain independence, your support remains crucial. Here are some practical ways to guide your child through their first months at uni.

1. Encourage independence while staying supportive

University is a time for students to develop independence, problem-solving skills and confidence in their abilities. Encourage them to take responsibility for their study schedules, finances, and commitments, but remind them that you’re always there for guidance. Simple questions like, “How are you managing your workload?” can open the door for helpful conversations without being overbearing.

2. Understand uni processes and key dates

Uni life comes with a new set of deadlines and processes, from enrolment and timetables to census dates and assessments. Understanding these timelines can help you offer gentle reminders to your child while allowing them to take ownership of their responsibilities. Encourage them to set up reminders for key dates and explore UniSC’s academic calendar, which outlines crucial deadlines. Additionally, UniSC provides orientation sessions and student services that can help them navigate administrative tasks efficiently. Knowing where to find support can ease the transition and reduce stress for both you and your child.

3. Check in on their wellbeing

Adjusting to university life can be overwhelming, and some students may experience stress, anxiety, or homesickness—especially if they’ve moved away from home. Encourage your child to make use of UniSC’s student wellbeing services, which offer counselling, personal support and Safer Communities initiatives and services. Remind them that feeling a bit lost at first is normal, but support is always available. If your child has individual needs due to a disability, illness or injury, they should be encouraged to reach out to AccessAbility Services to discuss their unique needs.

4. Help them establish a study-life balance

Balancing study, work, and social life is a learning curve. Encourage your child to create a study routine while making time for exercise, hobbies, and social activities. UniSC’s student clubs are a great way to meet new people and feel part of the campus community.

5. Support their financial independence

University often comes with new financial responsibilities, from textbooks to transport and rent. Having open conversations about budgeting and financial management can help your child feel more prepared. UniSC offers scholarships and financial assistance, so it’s worth exploring what’s available. Scholarships aren't just for new students, with many scholarships available for students as they enter later Semesters of study.

6. Encourage them to ask for help when needed

Some students may hesitate to ask for help, but universities have a number of resources designed to support them. Whether they need academic assistance, career advice, or personal support, UniSC offers a range of services to help them succeed. Remind them that seeking help isn't weakness.

7. Celebrate their achievements

University is full of small and big wins—whether it’s acing an assignment, making new friends or landing an internship. Celebrating their progress, no matter how small, helps build confidence and motivation. A simple “I’m proud of you” can go a long way.

Transitioning to university is a journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery. As a parent, your role is to support, encourage and reassure your child as they navigate this new chapter. With the right balance of independence and support, they’ll develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive at UniSC.

If your child needs additional support, encourage them to explore UniSC’s student services or reach out to their program coordinators. UniSC is here to help them make the most of their uni experience.
