Professor Ian Lowe AO is a world leader in the field of environmental sciences and technology. He has had a significant influence on governments around the world in how they consider environmental issues, and in shaping public understanding of the environment through analysis and commentary on environmental, social, and economic issues. Professor Lowe was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2001 for services to science and technology, particularly in the area of environmental studies. In 2002, he was awarded a Centenary Medal for contributions to environmental science and won the Eureka Prize for promotion of science. His contributions have been recognised by the Prime Minister’s Environment Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement, the Queensland Premier’s Millennium Award for Excellence in Science, and being named Humanist of the Year in 1988. Professor Lowe was former President of the Australian Conservation Foundation serving for a decade, and has been an active member on many councils relating to environmental health and climate change. Past advisory roles include the Government task force implementing the reform of science education, the task force advising Brisbane City Council on Climate Change and Energy, the Western Australia Water Panel and the National Greenhouse Advisory Panel. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering as well as being former President of the Queensland Academy of the Arts and Sciences. Professor Lowe is an Emeritus Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Griffith University and an adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
