Professor Joanne Scott was employed at UniSC for a period of 25 Years from January 1997 to December 2022. Commencing as Associate Lecturer, Australian and Cultural Studies, she advanced through the academic ranks to be promoted to Professor of History in 2010.

As an academic, Joanne built an impressive research record in the fields of Australian history and Australian studies, including social labour and cultural history. Her notable publications include books on the history of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, a history of the Brisbane Exhibition and an History of QUT.

In 2006 Joanne became Head of School, Social Sciences. By 2011, she was Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, then Executive Dean from 2012 of what became the Faculty of Arts, Business and Law in 2016. In 2017 Joanne was appointed to the newly formed position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement). In this role she was responsible for campuses, marketing, UniSC Art Gallery, the Development Office and engagement activities.

Joanne was also a champion of equity and diversity, and actively contributed to key forums and programs including SAGE, Reconciliation Action Plan, Disability Action Plan and Scholars at Risk. As Chair of UniSC’s Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Joanne worked actively and collaboratively to create a culture of belonging and ensuring that our campuses are safe, supportive and respectful.

In summary, Joanne is worthy of the award of Emeritus Professor for both her record of scholarship and the significant role she has played over many years in establishing UniSC as a leading multi-campus regional university. She has contributed to the research, teaching and engagement credentials of UniSC in many ways, including the leadership of numerous committees, forums, initiatives, projects and partnerships. Joanne is well respected for her leadership by the university and wider community.
