Australia's unique forests and plantations provide a sustainable ecosystem and sustainable resource for the forestry sector. The industry contributes over $22 billion (AUD) of economic turnover each year and employs over 75,000 people. Close to 1.6 billion people - more than 25 percent of the world's population - rely on forest resources for their livelihoods and most of them (1.2 billion) use trees on farms to generate food and cash. Moreover, many countries in the developing world draw on fuelwood to meet as much as 90 percent of energy requirements.
Join UniSC's Forest Research Institute on the first Tuesday of each month to learn about forestry and sustainability. At each event, researchers and HDR students from the FRI, including the Forest Industries Research Centre (FIRC), Tropical Forests and People Research Centre (TFPRC) and National Centre for Timber Durability and Design Life (Timber Durability), will share insights from their latest projects and discuss challenges and innovations in forestry, with a particular focus on sustainability and the vital role forests play in tackling climate change.
While this event is designed for UniSC staff and students and staff, interested members of the public are invited to attend this monthly event, hosted at Lecture Theatre 4, Sunshine Coast Campus, OR you can join the livestream via Teams (Link valid for all sessions).
