Dr Alison Craswell is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Health at UniSC, working in collaboration with the Research Development Unit at Caboolture hospital, Metro North Health, to build capacity in clinical staff, their research skills and outputs.
With a focus on research with older adults, Alison’s streams of research include: Digital Health and Informatics - improving the ways nurses work technology evaluating technology workflows and iEMR; Health Services - acute care of older adults, emergency department models of care for older people; and Vascular Access – peripheral and central intravenous catheters in older adults. Alison represents UniSC in the AVATAR group, Alliance for Vascular Access Teaching and Research.
Alison supervises higher degree research students in the areas of Digital Health and Informatics, Older Adults and Qualitative methodologies. Alison has more than 20 years clinical experience in nursing with a clinical background in paediatrics, midwifery and neonatal nursing. Project manager of the successful CEDRiC project (Care coordination through Emergency Department, Residential Aged Care and Primary Health Collaboration), Alison’s research has impact. The resultant Geriatric Emergency Department Intervention (GEDI) is recognised as improving acute care of older adults and translated into Emergency Departments across Queensland by the State Government.
Potential Research Projects for HDR and Honours Students
- Caregivers of the Infirm elderly with end-stage kidney disease; the Co-Timely study. Funded by Wishlist in collaboration with SCHHS and The George Institute.
- An increasing number of elderly patients are reaching end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Some of these patients will choose to be managed conservatively and others by dialysis. Co-TIMELY will identify caregivers of elderly patients with ESKD being managed with conservative care and will examine caregiver experience. The study will involve qualitative interviews with up to 20 caregivers and be analysed as part of this project. This project has ethics approval and is recruiting at SCUH.
