Growing up in Adelaide, Mikkayla started swimming at the age of 8 and says that she looks back on her younger swimming years with enjoyment. Mikkayla describes the whole of 2018 as a highlight- she made her first senior Australian team, made her first Commonwealth Games, making the final. Following her maiden appearance, she picked up a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay and broke the Australian record, at the Pan Pacific Championships.

A promising youngster, she collected nine gold medals at the National Age Championships in 2009. Mikkayla is focused on improving even more over the next year with her favoured 200m freestyle stroke, citing her big goal as making the Olympic Games in Tokyo. With a degree in Sports Business started in Sydney, Mikkayla hopes to work in either rugby league or AFL related professions in an attempt to gain an insight into a different sport.
