Chlamydia are genetically diverse obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens of humans and animals. This project will perform expanded surveillance of chlamydial pathogens in a range of animal hosts, providing new insight into the diversity and host range of these bacteria
Chlamydia are obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens of humans and animals, including domesticated livestock, birds and wildlife. While it was initially thought that chlamydial diversity and host range was well defined, molecular methods have now revealed a much broader range of bacteria, hosts and associated diseases than previously imagined. Building on this knowledge, this project will perform expanded molecular surveillance of chlamydial pathogens in a range of animal hosts, providing new insight into the diversity and host range of these bacteria but also revealing important new information about their reservoirs and transmission to inform efforts to control disease in affected populations. This project will also evaluate use of newly developed rapid molecular assays for detection of these pathogens.

- Domestic or International applicants accepted
- Approved for admission to USC's PhD program (if not a current USC PhD student, the application for admission and the application for this scholarship can be submitted simultaneously)
- Bachelor's Degree with First Class Honours or Research Masters Degree in a science discipline (or equivalent qualification)
- Not hold a PhD already
- Not have previously held a Commonwealth-funded HDR scholarship unless it was terminated within six months of the current scholarship's payments commencing
- Not be the recipient of an equivalent award, scholarship, or salary, providing a benefit greater than 75 percent of the Research Training Program rate to undertake a HDR. Income unrelated to the course of study is not to be taken into account.
- Satisfactory progress must be maintained throughout the HDR program.
