A critical understanding of competition and consumer law is vital for local, national or global commercial legal practice. Th e course introduces you to the principles of competition and consumer law, with an emphasis on the Australian Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth). After introducing the regulatory structure of competition and consumer law in Australia, we will examine the economic concepts that underlie competition regulation. The first part of the course then focuses on competition law examining the regulation of cartels and other horizontal arrangements, misuse of market power, exclusive dealing, resale price maintenance, mergers and acquisitions and access regimes. The second part of the course turns to particular aspects of the consumer protection provisions such as misleading and deceptive conduct, unconscionability, consumer guarantees and manufacturer’s liability.
