My job

I produce daily and breaking stories online for the Sydney Morning Herald, as well as related publications.

How I got the job

I was headhunted for a newly developed position as online and AirLink (a flagship Fairfax Media app) producer, since I already had a vested interest in honing my digital production skills while working as an intern reporter at the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper while studying at USC.

My degree was quite comprehensive compared to other journalism-focused degrees at other universities.

The Bachelor of Journalism at USC covered all aspects of journalism through its different practical courses, which helped me gain a better of understanding of what it would be like to work in television, radio, print or online news.

I feel this gave me and my classmates a competitive edge over other journalism graduates. I still find myself drawing on things I've learned from some of my lecturers.

To succeed, you really have to apply yourself, seize any opportunity that comes along, work hard and, most importantly, love what you do. Trust me, I know this from experience.

What I enjoy most

Besides being able to enjoy cityscape views from our office, I enjoy flexing my creative muscle online, with full knowledge that thousands of people will have the ability to see all of our hard work at the click of a mouse.

Why university?

I wanted to give myself the best chance at achieving my dream career.

Why USC?

It was already familiar to me having grown up in the area. Studying at USC meant that I didn't have to move to Brisbane or interstate and pay thousands of dollars in accommodation and transport in order to study for a degree.

For me, it was only a 10-minute walk to class every day and I loved it. All the tutors and professors were helpful, easy to talk to and keen to see you succeed.

Having the kind of personable relationship I had with my professors definitely helped get me through my degree.
