Researcher develops workplace assessment app

USC research on the best possible way to assess students in the workplace has led to the commercialisation of an app called CeMeE.

Initially developed to assess pre-service teachers doing practicums at schools, CeMeE is now being modified to assess USC students studying paramedic science, public health, environmental health and education in the workplace.

USC academic and 3D Performance Founder Chris Dann said he hoped the CeMeE system would be incorporated into training at Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital and many other places.

“The possibilities are endless,” he said. “It can be adapted for use in any industry or situation where someone needs to supervise and give feedback. Imagine early childhood teachers being able to send progress reports and video to parents in real-time.”

Mr Dann worked as a teacher, administrator and principal in state high schools for 18 years before joining USC’s School of Education in 2006.

He was responsible for the placement and management of USC Education students completing their practicums at schools, and realised that the way they were assessed and given feedback by their supervising teachers varied greatly.

“This assessment and feedback is very important for a pre-service teacher’s training and future career and some supervising teachers are much better communicators than others,” he said. “I was determined to develop a more reliable, equitable and transparent process.”

Mr Dann and his team at USC developed ‘Pre-Service Teacher Tracker’ which has now evolved into CeMeE, an interactive touch screen assessment tool that provides real-time feedback and can include notes and video.

3D Performance is the latest high-tech business to set up shop at USC’s Innovation Centre and business is booming.

“Sales took us by surprise so we now have a distributor in the Prep to Year 12 market that sells to schools plus we’ve had requests for licences in Asia, the US and the UK and interest from the training industry and major franchise companies with Australia,” he said.

Mr Dann is also undertaking a PhD about the impact on the learning and assessment experience that mobile technologies can have on workplace assessment at USC.
