The decision to study Journalism at the University of the Sunshine Coast has opened the door to a world of opportunities for Taya Sweeney, 19, of Rosemount.

The former Burnside State High School student recently returned from a semester of study at Adelphi University, Long Island, New York thanks to USC’s Global Opportunities (GO) student exchange program.

The GO program enables students to spend up to two semesters overseas while earning credit towards their degrees at more than 70 international partner institutions, including universities in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

For Taya it was the chance to fulfil a long-held dream of living in New York while also pursuing her passion for writing.

She combined her journalism studies with her social media talents to share many of her experiences in a blog and via Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.

“Social media was a great way to share my stories instantly with friends and connect with industry contacts as well,” she said.

“The Adelphi campus was just like the colleges you see in films, with fraternities and sororities and the dormitories are built around a baseball diamond,” she said.

“I also loved my times in the city, from Broadway shows to walks in Central Park and riding the subway.”

As well as sharing the highlights of her trip online, Taya also developed her video editing skills and produced a film for one of her classes.

“Now video editing, as well as writing, is at the heart of what I want to do in journalism,” she said.

Taya said she hoped to gain an internship with local media while completing her USC degree and was confident her studies would continue to open the right doors.

“When I decided to study at USC and looked into Journalism, I saw it was a really good program that would lead to some interesting career opportunities,” she said.
