Council is the University's governing body and derives its powers from the University of the Sunshine Coast Act 1998.
Council has the power to manage and control University affairs, property and finances, and appoint University staff. Where allowed under the Act, Council may delegate its powers to an appropriately qualified member of Council or member of the University’s staff; or to an appropriately qualified committee that includes one or more members of Council.

The Academic Board is the University's senior academic body.
The Board was established under the University of the Sunshine Coast Act 1998 to:
- advise the Council about teaching, scholarship and research matters concerning the University
- formulate proposals for the academic policies of the University
- monitor the academic activities of the University's faculties
- promote and encourage scholarship and research at the University

Vice-Chancellor and President's committees
Art Collection Advisory Committee
The University of the Sunshine Coast Vice-Chancellor’s Art Advisory Committee (Art Advisory Committee, Committee, or VCAAC) is and advisory committee to the Vice-Chancellor and the President. The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to provide expert, balanced and diverse opinion in the implementation of the University’s Art Collection Managerial Policy and Procedures, and advice on the incorporation of art into the University’s public spaces.
Please note, updates to the Artworks Acquisition and Deaccessioning—Managerial Policy are in the final stages. The new policy will now be known as Art Collection Managerial Policy and Procedures (as noted above).
Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee
The Equity and Diversity Committee is an advisory committee to the Vice-Chancellor and President. The role of the Equity and Diversity Committee is to address equity and diversity issues on campus for both staff and students and promote the principles of the University’s Equity and Diversity Policy.
The role of the Executive is to advise the Vice-Chancellor and President on University strategy, policy and operations. The Committee provides the means for Executive leaders of the University to discuss such matters, and is positioned to promote open communication and sharing of information.
Indigenous Advisory Committee
Members of the Indigenous Advisory Committee advise the Vice-Chancellor and President on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy matters relevant to the University. The role of the Committee is to also provide strategic advice and guidance to the Vice-Chancellor and President on the achievement of outcomes for Indigenous students, staff and research and curriculum matters associated with the University, consistent with the Strategic Plan 2016-2020 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and employment initiatives
Internationalisation Advisory Committee
The Committee is an advisory committee of the Vice-Chancellor and President on key aspects of the University's Internationalisation activities including international student growth.
Quality and Standards Committee
The Quality and Standards Committee (QSC) is an advisory committee to the Vice-Chancellor and President. Its role includes:
- to undertake ongoing review of compliance and alignment with the Higher Education Standards across the University
- to further develop quality management consistent with the Quality and Standards Framework
- to coordinate and oversee TEQSA-related activities
- consistent with provisions in policy and procedures relating to formal reviews, provide advice and monitor action in relation to review findings
Reconciliation Action Plan Review Committee
The Vice-Chancellor and President’s Reconciliation Action Plan Review Committee (RAP Review Committee) reports to the Vice-Chancellor and President.
The primary role of the Vice-Chancellor and President’s RAP Review Committee is to develop and implement a systematic Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2017-2019 (RAP 2017-2019) monitoring and reporting process for the duration of the plan. In undertaking this work, it is anticipated that the RAP Review Committee will be monitoring and reporting of RAP implementation and progress based on the timelines in the Plan.
Senior Staff Forum
The Senior Staff Forum is an advisory committee to the Vice-Chancellor and President. Its role is to:
- act as a forum for the discussion of any general issue affecting the University;
- discuss major sectoral issues and their impact on the University;
- advise the Vice-Chancellor on relevant policies developed for formal approval; and
- consider issues from Cost Centres relevant to University business and progress.
Student Representative Council
The Student Representative Council (SRC) reports to the Vice-Chancellor and President and gives students a chance to discuss emerging issues as well as views about learning and teaching, services and the USC environment.
The role of the Student Representative Council is:
- to represent the student community and act as a means of communication between the University and the student community
- to actively contribute to University decision making in promoting a positive student experience
- to inform the Vice-Chancellor and President about emerging issues for students within its terms of reference
- to provide input into the development of policies and services that support students and advance the quality of learning and research activities
- to encourage student feedback and share University initiatives resulting from student feedback
