Innovation Centre

Breadcrumbs

The Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast P/L (IC) is a Business Accelerator based at the USC Sunshine Coast campus which assists local innovators, entrepreneurs and USC researchers. The IC is backed by the region’s leading University (USC) and was established in 2002 to provide the ideal place to build a smart business – a place where innovation lives and entrepreneurs thrive. Members and students can tap into a deep entrepreneurial ecosystem of globally experienced private sector sponsors, supporters, 32 experienced business mentors and access to AdvanceQLD and AusIndustry Grants Programs. The IC has assisted over 182 member companies, facilitated over 170 USC student internships and job placements, assisted IC members to raise over $33M. Approximately 88 per cent of IC members and alumni are still in business and they have employed over 780 jobs and achieved export sales in excess of $28M. The IC is a wholly-owned entity of USC with separate board of directors.

Assisting enterprising USC students and Work Integrated Learning

The IC offers motivated students free access to most of our programs and events. The IC member companies can also provide an ideal and convenient connection to the USC Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program. The WIL course provides an opportunity to experience the real workplace and involves completion of a set of work activities under the guidance and supervision of an academic supervisor at USC and an industry supervisor from the partner organisation. Students will apply knowledge and skills gained throughout their university studies and develop a practical understanding of the industry and/or profession. The student must perform satisfactorily in all assessment tasks and complete 96 hours of vocational placement to pass this WIL Internship Course.

The IC and its members regularly seek access to USC students and there are also project and paid opportunities available too – see list of current IC members.

SiliconCoast FaceBook Group and Startup Launchlab

The IC and USC helped establish entrepreneurial capacity building events (ie. regular Startup Weekends, Coder Dojo’s, BigDayIn, Enterprise / Innovation Day, Investment Pitch and Mentor Blaze) and a new opportunity for entrepreneurship students is Startup Launchlab. The IC is a partner of Startup Launchlab – a credit bearing course run at USC. An engaging, authentic learning experience provided for business, journalism and design students, giving students the opportunity to create authentic industry networks and gain insight into current industry trends. The Startup Launchlab course encourages students to develop an entrepreneurial mindset of being creative, adaptive, testing assumptions and building a project or venture iteratively to reduce risks.

USC students looking to network with local innovators, entrepreneurs, hipsters and creatives should also consider joining the 1,100 strong local SiliconCoast FaceBook Group.

Regular events

The IC offers an extensive program of events. Business professionals across a range of areas provide guidance and advice in formal and informal settings throughout the year.
