Dr Vernon Harris

Honorary Senior Fellow (May 2019)

Dr Vernon Harris was named an Honorary Senior Fellow in May 2019 in recognition of his contributions to Nursing Science at USC and to the study of the world’s marine invertebrates.

Dr Vernon Harris is a generous supporter of USC Fraser Coast, a lifelong learner and a passionate researcher.

Dr Harris established a bursary for Nursing Science students at USC Fraser Coast in honour of his wife Lucy. The Lucy Harris Bursary supports current and future Nursing Science students undertaking a clinical placement in a rural or remote location, preferably in a community where Indigenous healthcare is a significant part of the experience. As a result of this bursary, several Fraser Coast Nursing students have experienced the challenges and rewards of nursing in rural towns and remote communities.

In addition, Dr Harris also regularly attends events at USC's Fraser Coast campus and provides sage advice and inspiration to members of USC Fraser Coast's academic community at monthly meetings.

Dr Harris is a zoologist who has worked since the late 1940s as a lecturer and researcher at universities in the United Kingdom, Africa and Australia. His significant contribution to the study of the world's marine invertebrates includes the discovery of new genera and species of crustaceans, including some specimens collected from waters around the Fraser Coast. Dr Harris continues to study marine organisms, collaborate with other researchers and have papers published in international scientific journals.

In recognition of his significant contribution to the USC Fraser Coast community and to the study of the world’s marine invertebrates, Dr Vernon Harris is a worthy recipient of the honorary award of Senior Fellow of the University of the Sunshine Coast.
