Bachelor of Environmental Health Science 2015

Environmental Health Science graduate Ashleigh Morris is passionate about reducing global waste. Receiving the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Undergraduate Award enabled her to undertake courses, research and an internship in Indonesia, which then led to her being offered a scholarship to complete an Honours degree on electronic waste at the University of New South Wales.

An unpaid internship with international waste recycling company TerraCycle in Sydney developed in to a paid role managing a national program on behalf of Nespresso to increase the collection and recycling of used coffee capsules. Ashleigh has also worked for global NGO, The Forest Trust (TFT) in Indonesia, liaising with a large global producer and supplier of palm oil to improve the conservation of Indonesia’s rainforest from which the oil is derived.

Returning to Australia this year, Ashleigh has shifted her focus bact to changing how waste is viewed and managed, particularly the ‘Take, Make, Use, Dispose’ linear economy. She has recently co-founded The Circular Experiment with her sister and fellow USC graduate Jaine Morris. The Circular Experiment is an organisation formed to assist small businesses reduce costs and improve profits by better planning and management of materials. Working with companies along Ocean Street in Maroochydore, the data collected over the next 12 months of the project will be used to evaluate the real worth of a Circular Economy-based approach and the feasibility of implementing it on a wider scale in the future.

Ashleigh is the recipient of the Early Career Environmental Health Professional of Year Award from Environmental Health Australia (NSW), and an ‘Aim for the Stars: Environment & Sustainability’ Scholarship from the Layne Beachley Foundation.
